Halloween is the time for scares, scary costumes, and trick or treating. It’s times like these that make us all want to grab some popcorn, find someone to hold on to (preferably someone brave), and find something scary to entertain us.
Good news for gamers looking for cheap games, several online retailers have started sales for the spooky season, with some horror games that have been counted by some reviewers as some of the best horror games made.
Full disclosure, a lot of the horror games on sale right now utilize the first-person perspective, with many even coming with VR support on consoles. That means that, if you decide to get these cheap games, be prepared to literally face the horrors.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
The Resident Evil franchise is so old, it would’ve been able to vote for 4 years. The first entry in the franchise is considered by many, rightfully, to be the codifier for the concept of survival horror, and has been remade several times over. The other entries in the franchise have received flak, but the latest entry, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, has been lauded as one of the best entries in the franchise, despite the initial doubts over its first-person perspective, a first in the franchise.
- $19.49 (originally $29.99) on PC at Green Man Gaming
- $19.49 (originally $29.99) for Xbox One at the Microsoft Store
The classic ‘alone in a desolate location’ concept is tried and tested, having been the plot of many a horror fiction. Alien: Isolation juxtaposes this with an authentic recreation of the franchise’s roots. Launched early 2014, it’s still widely popular, thanks to a genuinely terrifying experience that’s a treat, not only for Alien fans, but horror fans in general. The Xenomorph is scary again, and that’s both great and terrible.
Since its release in 2014, it’s gone down in price, and is for sale:
- $9.19 (originally $29.99) on PC at Fanatical
- $9 (originally $29.99) for Xbox One at Microsoft Store
Bioshock: The Collection
Dubbed as the spiritual successor to System Shock, in the best way possible, no first-person shooter is more influential than the first BioShock. While more action-oriented than most entries on this list, the sheer dementia of the settings, grounded in fantastical reality, make this series just as capable of raising blood pressure. Perhaps, the fact that it can scare players despite their superpowers makes it even more disturbing. Would you kindly consider that?
- $15 (usually $59.99) on PC at Green Man Gaming
This PS4 exclusive, made by Supermassive Games is a horror choose-your-own-adventure story featuring the standard horror setup: teens in a remote location trying to survive from a demented killer. Each decision made, each QTE failed has effects on the ending, and when someone bites it, they’re gone for good. It isn’t unheard of for players to lose all of the characters in their first playthrough, with all of them suffering cruel and unusual deaths. If you’re on console and looking for cheap games, this game is one to watch.
- $5.99 on PS4 at PlayStation Store
